Utilities: Gas, water & Electricity

When you rent a room or house your utilities (gas/water/electricity) are
often paid by the owner
and are included in the provisions and services of your monthly rent. If
the utilities are not included in your rent, you have to arrange a
supplier by yourself. Your house or apartment will have its own water,
gas and electricity meters. Each year you will receive a form from your
supplier requesting the current meter reading, so you will be charged on
actual usage. It is important to quickly arrange gas, water and
electricity in your home, in order to prevent additional costs and being
shut off.

Water:

The only supplier for water in Maastricht is WML (‘Water Maatschappij
Limburg’). When you move into your new home you have to inform WML that
you are the new resident. You will need your address, date of birth,
bank account number and meter readings.

Electricity and gas:

The energymarket in the Netherlands is liberalized, so you are able to
choose (or change) suppliers. Most of them have ‘green’ options, which
means that energy is bought from alternative sources such as wind, water
and biomass. When you move into your new home, you have to contact one
of the
energy suppliers and let them know you are the new resident. For
subscribing you need your address, date of birth, bank account number
and meter readings.

Which supplier?

For electricity and gas we advise you to subscribe with Essent. They are
one of the largest suppliers in the Netherlands and have competitive
rates. For water you can only choose for WML.
