Maasland Relocation

Register at city hall

When you move from another municipality in the Netherlands to Maastricht, you are obliged to register with the GBA (Gemeentelijke Basis Administratie / Personal Records Database of the municipality). After you have done this, you will be eligible to receive full funding as a student. For Dutch students, if you move within or to Maastricht you can register easily and quickly on the website of the municipality of Maastricht: www.maastricht.nl.

Moving from outside the Netherlands to Maastricht:

When you move from outside the Netherlands to Maastricht (and you are planning to stay longer than 4 months of the following 6 months) then you have to do your “first registration” at the City Counter (Gemeenteloket) of the municipality of Maastricht during opening hours.

How does it work:

To complete your “first registration” you must first contact the City Counter to make an appointment. All family members have to register in person and you need the following documents:

  • A valid form of identification (passport or identity card)
  • The rental/sale contract of your residence
  • Proof of deregistration (if you move from Aruba, Curacao, Sint Maarten, Bonaire, Saint-Eustatius or Saba.)

EU/non-EU nationals:

If you are a national of an EU/EEA county, the documents listed above are sufficient for registration. However, if you are not a national of an EU/EEA country, your right to reside in the Netherlands must be verified. You must submit a request for a residence permit to the Immigration and Naturalization Service (Immigratie en Naturalisatiedienst, IND). You can do this either before or after you register as a resident.

Tuition fee:

You must be registered with a city council in the residence area in order to meet the residence requirements which you need to be eligible for the lower –statutory- tuition fee. If you do not have a valid registration, or do not submit this to the University on time, you will be required to pay the higher ‘institutional’ tuition fee.

Deregistration:

Just as it is compulsory to register upon arrival, it is also necessary to de-register when you move out of the Netherlands. You can de-register at the website of the municipality or in person at the City Counter.

If you move to another address within the Netherlands, you can register yourself at the website of your new municipality. You will then be automatically deregistered from your current municipality.
